Winter Scaries: a Guide to Transitioning

So I feel like I’ve spoken on it before, but this time of year is usually the worst part of the year for me. The cold and rainy days just add up, and I end up wanting to stay inside 24/7. My closet is usually affected too. I try to do a clear out around this time too! It’s always a good idea to go through the mounds of clothes you probably have somewhere in your apartment or house. I’ve linked my depop if you want to shop some of those pieces. If not, no worries! Let’s move on.

The clothes that make the cut are usually ones that I can somewhat wear all year long. Obviously shorts and sweaters can be primarily seasonal, but don’t fret! There’s ways to make it work more than you might think. I’ve listed some of my favorite transitional spring outfit ideas below along with similar options!

Long Sleeve Graphic Tee: My New Love Affair

I have to be honest about this one… Ariana Grande’s song NASA totally made me want a NASA tee. I wanted one a little bit different than most of the classic ones, so I started searching. I found this one in the Urban Outfitter’s sale, and I immediately fell in love. The best part is, it’s under $20!!! I’ve linked the whole look below as well, so it’s shop-able.

Anyway, little did I know that I’d become obsessed with long sleeve tees when I opened the UO package. Since then, I’ve bought 2 more. They’re perfect this time of the year in my opinion, especially in Charleston. Their ability to be layered and simply covering your arms almost makes them the perfect transitional piece. The super cool and laid-back look can be paired with almost any skirt, shorts or pants. Don’t be afraid of adding some color or prints too!

The Essential Light Jacket

IMG_9079.jpg

This Tomorrowland jacket has been in my closet for years now! I found it super cheap in the Saks sale, but have yet to find it online. While it might not be online, there are many similar options to fulfill any of your transitional jacket fantasies and aspirations. I wore this one over a cashmere sweater from A Days March, and before you comment about the cashmere, wait! I’ll go more into detail with that later. This type of jacket is a good wardrobe essential since it has some versatility! Paired with pants or some super distressed denim shorts, this will always be a look.

Side note: I held citrus in front of my face, what’s more Spring-y than that?

Oh-So Boujee Summer-Weight Cashmere

This summer-weight cashmere cardigan has been my biggest splurge as of late. I bought it for my upcoming trip to Paris because I figured how wrong could this classic possibly go? Since then, it’s become a favorite. I’m listing cashmere in transitional spring pieces because I’ve found it to be so breathable. This type of item is really beneficial when you’re tired of wearing the same coats and jackets you wore all winter. On a colder spring day, throw another sweater underneath it or, referenced earlier, a long sleeve graphic tee. Another tip with any type of cardigan is to leave the top and bottom buttons unbuttoned. This will give you the really trendy cool and slouchy look.

Let Your Boots Carry You Through

IMG_8933.jpg

Finally, a good pair of boots can be your transitional spring piece. I know you’re thinking boots can be too much in warm weather, but I’m here to erase that feeling! I have so many pairs of Doc Martens, but I chose these Chelsea ones to switch it up from my go-to black ones. Clunky boots are great for everyone at almost all times of the year. They pair well with any type of denim pant or short, sundresses or even a suit. For this transitional piece, I definitely recommend throwing some color in the mix to really fit the spring aesthetic. In hindsight, I definitely could have added a brighter color, but the boots are carrying me through.

NYFW SS19

I don’t even know where to begin. You guys know how much I enjoy going to NYC. Between the fashion shows, the shopping, and the after parties, I literally cannot get enough. I seriously don’t know how “higher up” people say they get tired of fashion week. (I’ll gladly take their place) Anyways, I attended four shows this weekend due to lack of time in the city. A weekend just isn’t enough. However, the memories are there and, the reason you guys are here, the fashion was too. Before we get started, I’ll note I was on my best behavior and only bought some handles from CB2 and a Le Labo Santal candle. I can’t wait to show you the project underway in my living room.

Anyways,

Day 1

IMG_0312.JPG

The first Day I attended LRS and was supposed to attend Chromat. I woke up at 4am to make my 6am departure flight from CHS to NYC, and let’s just say this is the day that “tried” me. I definitely felt a little down in the dumps. The weather was so hot, and I had brought mostly fall clothing options. But, embracing the heat, I wore my wool CDG pants and a long sleeve top to both shows. Before I forget to mention, I sadly wasn’t able to go to Chromat, but I was there in spirit (lol). I also had a meeting with Piaget before any show since they were lending me a piece for fashion week. Not going to lie, having such a gorgeous watch saved my phone battery this past weekend.

I was able to see my friend Conner Salas (he snapped the photo to the right, and I also spent the entire weekend with one of my best friends from Charleston, Lily Sykora. You’ll see her in the collage below! There’s also a little snip from the LRS show!

One final Ps. the “shop the look” isn’t the exact same for any of the outfits I wore. Like I’ve been saying, I’m holding onto pieces for longer and buying more for investment, so nothing is exactly brand new.

Style Notes: there weren’t a lot of notes from this day. Nothing seemed to pop to me as a new trend.

Day 2

This was the highlight day, but that also makes sense. It was the full day where I was actually rested and had some amazing shows to see. I saw R13 and PRISCAVera this day, and neither disappointed. To start the day, I had breakfast with Justin Livingston! It was definitely a fun little Kiki, ya know? Then I ran to Lily’s apartment, and we scurried to the R13 show that was in Brooklyn.

The first look of the day was keeping the heat in mind. Although it had cooled down some by Saturday, I was not in the business to be the sweaty, frazzled mess I was the day before.

Style Notes from R13: I need something Chartreuse and the western style CK205W29NYC boots I just ordered as an early birthday present are going to be a fall staple. Expect some fringe and neon, maybe, but hopefully, not together. Also, low riders are coming back, and Kaia Gerber looks amazing in them.

Pt 2. Day 2

IMG_0548.jpg

The second part of the day was filled with Lily and I running around grabbing coffee and trying to find time to eat and take photos. I added a jacket, switched top, and changed my shoes for the second look of the day. It had started raining as we waited in line for PRISCAVera, but alas, rain could not stop the fun of this day.

Style notes: be ready for some ‘00s glory. Flip flops with socks, silky dress silhouettes, and a further affirmation we need to get used to seeing low riders.

If you were expecting a crazy day 3, you’ve scrolled too far! I went out with friends Saturday night, and let’s just say I had a lot of fun. So much fun, that I recuperated the morning of my flight back home to CHS, so not a lot happened Sunday.

Sustainability, Trends, & "Me"

As fall styles start to become ever prevalent in the stores we frequent to shop, we'll start to see the newest trends for the upcoming FW season. If you're really into fashion shows, you might already have a clue. Between all the blogger gifting and influencers though, most of us already have a sense of whats to come. Some of these trends are already everywhere and are just continuing into cooler weather. I adore trends, and I find it really hard sometimes not to buy into them, especially some major pieces like the Triple S's. It took all I could do to send mine back, but as they're going out I'm so glad I opted for me Acne Percey sneakers.

I'm not here to talk about old trends, and how I've made it out of last season without busting the bank. That story does giving me some context to the more important topic of incorporating new trends with out losing your sense of "you." This is a topic that has been talked and talked about, but it still seems to resonate. Trends are always tricky because they're so fun but they can also be detrimental to our environment. I've become really conscious (but still making mistakes and figuring out the way) of fast fashion and how we can be more sustainable to help our environment, while still enjoying fashion. I obviously thrift, and I obviously spend my money on some designer pieces. I love doing both, and I think both are ways to be a lot more sustainable. I urge you to do the same. I want to talk through 3 somewhat sustainable outfits that, I think, show off trends, but still keep my sense of me. They show how you can buy classic pieces, thrifted or designer (or even high street) you'll keep forever that are still considered trendy for the time being.

1. Western / Cowboy Boots

IMG_0117.jpg

So I don't necessarily think this is a new huge trend, but as fall and winter approach, we're going to be seeing a lot more western inspired items in places like H&M, Topshop(man), etc. These types of pieces have had a community that has never stopped wearing them, I.e. get into a thrift store!!! I found these cropped cowboy style boots in a Goodwill for a whopping $5. I paired them with a classic "Timmy" outfit consisting of pleated grandpa pants and a gingham button up (also thrifted). It's using key outfits in your wardrobe and adding one trendy piece that really help you keep your sense of you. However, I definitely want to get another pair of boots that are a little more cold weather geared, but these suffice for now. Maybe I'll even add a western top? It's small details like this that easily allow you to add a sustainable trendy piece. If I really end up hating the boots later, I can donate them, and that's okay. Hopefully the cycle will continue.

Ps. The two on the left are men's and the two on the right are women's. All of the options are very western, but can be incorporated after the trend dies down. Boots look super bad-boy on guys, and the boots for women can be paired with any dress to instantly "cool" it up.

1. Leopard Print

IMG_9912.jpg

Not that leopard print has ever been out of style, but as of late it's making a comeback as the hot print. It's a classic that can be used in any look. I have this Urban Outfitters one. I went for an option that isn't designer, but is still quality enough to last if I take good care of it. I'm not sure if I'll want to wear leopard 5 years from now, so that's my reasoning. I do think it's a little more timeless on women than men (sorry guys!) With that in mind, Leopard is also defintely harder to find for men, but a classic leopard shirt can be a party night staple. If you like to be more lowkey, go for some socks! Women's wise, the options are everywhere. I personally LOVE the skirt paired with a band tee!

3. Vinyl, PVC, Coated Fabric (you get it)

Out of all of the trends I've talked about, this one is the mot tricky. I only found 3 options for you guys, but if you're dying for the trend, I recommend a bag or a rain jacket. This Stutterheim raincoat is absolutely perfect to style with the trend. It's functional and trendy, so there's more of a reason to justify your vinyl raincoat aspirations. I also have a Comme Des Garcon Shirt vinyl paper bag that I love, but it's nearly impossible to find now. SOOO, I found the Bloomingdale's clear bag that's absolutely perfect. It's affordable and reusable. You can make it fashion or take it to the beach or even use it as a chic grocery bag.

Insane $16,000 Wishlist

Okay, so I've never done something that is so consumer-minded, but I really love the idea of doing an insane wish list that is all designer items. I'm vouching by saying it's a good way to see some trends for the upcoming Fall/Winter season, and we can search on the high street for more affordable alternatives. I can assure you guys I will, MAX, buy 2 or 3 things from this list. Most likely the cheaper ones at that! Nonetheless, I thought it'd be fun to show you some of my favorite pieces that I'd love to get my hands on if money wasn't in the picture. I'm really loving a lot of the western vibes Prada and CK is doing. I'll for sure being looking at Topman and Asos to find some of those items. True to form, there is a pair of checked pants. I've also aqquired an affinity towards anything PVC since I've purchased my CDG Shirt tote. What're your favorites for the upcoming season? Any trends you plan to follow?

Ps. These are in order of how badly I want them.

Tips: Not Buying a New Wardrobe for Back to School

I’m not sure if it’s just happening to me right now, but I’m so bored with most of my summer clothes at this point. With that in mind, I’m super pumped to see some FW look books come out. It’s always exciting to see how places like Zara, Topman, or ASOS will style the FW trends. It’s  also back to school time, which means tons of shopping and retailers everywhere are gearing up for the busy months. I love back to school shopping, like most of us, so I was wanting to do a look book for my Youtube channel (plug: if you want to check it out, click the little youtube icon above to get to my channel). I scoured all the high street brands I could find, because I want to find some current pieces you guys could buy at an affordable price. Unfortunately, I found absolutely nothing. Everything I wanted was either out of my budget or just bad. Yes, I know we still have a ton of time for FW items to come out, and retailers are just now putting out some of the transitioning pieces. However, it kind of left me at a stump when it comes to a back to school look book. Then I started thinking about the positives because lets be honest, who doesn’t want to save some $$$ when they can? I didn’t really want to spend money on back to school clothing to begin with, especially since I’m bored with summer clothes and transitioning pieces we’re all being marketed. Besides, in the warm months, less is usually more. I’ve literally DIYed so much and they’re always the pieces you guys ask about. The point of today’s post is to put a middle finger in the air to buying new clothes that you don’t want for back to school and the transitioning period because a lot of times they simply suck. I’ll still do a back to school look book, but it’ll be mostly pieces I already have, and I plan on checking out Goodwill to see if they have anything I can DIY or that’ll fit in. In the meantime, I want to give you guys some tips on revamping your closet for the back to school period if you’re like me and not wanting to spend during this little transitioning season.

1. Cut up your pants.

If you’ve worn a pair of pants to death and you don’t think you’ll miss their full length form, take some scissors to them! I’ve done this with old khaki pants and denim. The shorts in these photos are cut up denim from Goodwill. It’s super easy, and all you have to do is lay a pair of shorts that you like the length of on the pants for reference then start cutting. After a wash and dry, they should be good to go! Also, if you don’t like the cut edge look, just leave them a bit longer so you can roll them up twice.

2. Undo a few buttons on your tired “formal” collar shirt and iron it

I don’t have a specific example that I’ve done because I do this so much! So all you have to do is maybe undo like 3 of the buttons on the shirt and pull the collar outwards. It’ll kind of look more like a revere collar shirt, which is always cool, and then iron and press it down. You can continue to iron until you think it’ll suffice.

IMG_9468.jpg

3. Always wear items in different ways

If you’re someone who is bashful about wearing the same items a lot, I have a solution for you! This one takes planning and a little bit more of an eye for putting outfits together, but it can be done. I always try to wear my items in different ways. What I mean by this is tucking in a shirt one time and wearing a belt, the next time, leave it untucked. Pants wise, cuff them differently. Maybe you could wear a belt and situate them differently on your waist. If you are constantly changing the way you wear items, they won’t seem to repeat as often, and you won’t get the dreaded, “Didn’t you wear that last week?” comment.

Best of luck on this back to school season, and if you are in need of a backpack to get you started, I’m doing a giveaway on my insta!

3 Blazers, 3 Contradicting Outfits

1. The Look for the person who hates color, but also wants to look Summer-y

The first look we have includes a staple from everyone's previous fall/winter  closet - a checked blazer. If yours isn't too thick, it can pair perfectly with a thin rayon button up like this old one from Zara. Pro-tip: stay away from thick fabrics and lined blazers in the summer, they add all the degrees. Add some shorts, like these Vineyard Vines (not my type of brand, I know) ones from Nordstrom rack. Finally, add some classic mules and throw in a cowrie shell necklace. Boom. A twist on a blazer from last season. I kept this outfit very neutral to appeal to all of you "stay-away-from-color" people, but color can be incorporated anywhere if you're looking to get a little more Summer-y.

2. The Look for the person who wants to wear linen, but they're a rocker

Next, we have a linen look. I found this unlined Perry Ellis blazer in my dad's closet when I was visiting, and I immediately "borrowed" it. It works so well with the brown and gold JCrew belt that give these thrifted Gap linen trousers the coolest paper bag waist. I decided to add some more casual elements to "punk" up the outfit. After all, didn't we all go through a punk rock phase? My CDG converse and an old band tee gave the outfit just the juxtaposition I was looking for.

3. The Look for the person who needs a *Night* look, but they love Tee's

Finally, I went for a "night" look that was also comfortable. Granted, it's no black carpet number, but you are sure to look quite snazzy in a similar outfit. My blazer is DKNY with a little patch on it. It calls for a different blog post, but DIYing your clothes can totally bring back new life in them. Keeping on theme with navy but adding black back in (Navy's superior color), I grabbed my CDG pinstripe trousers. I bought them from Farfetch forever ago, but they're still a pair of my favorites pants. To brighten it up, I added a Mott & Bow tee with my suede Grenson Archies. Oh, and while it may be a night look, it is always okay to have sunglasses to add to the look

A Look For Under $20: Goodwill

So I already posted the youtube video of the mini vlog and outfit under $20 look book, but I wanted to make a little blog post as well just to stress the idea of how you can still be stylish without a maxed out credit card. Yes, yes, I am guilty of wanting designer items more often than not, but if you take the time, you're sure to find just as many cool gems at a fraction of the cost! I've used a lot of posts already to talk about my love of thrifting, but with a video attached to the bottom, I figured this bit of evidence could solidify my thoughts and "proclamations."

Are you guys into thrifitng or is it just me? I'm so obsessed with going into finding new life for everything, including furniture. I've just recently moved into a new apartment, and with all the new space, I've been scouring everywhere trying to find some unique second-hand pieces.

5 Most Worn Items

So i've been writing down a ton of ideas for post on the blog and for my Youtube channel, and I'm especially pumped to be writing this one. I looked and went through my closet and found my top 5 most worn items. These are all the things I couldn't live w/o (joking). A lot of them are investment pieces, so don't feel like they're as much of a must in your closet as they are mine. I can say though, I have gotten my fair share of uses with these items and the cost per wait is low. I linked as much as I was able to incase you guys want to shop anything!

IMG_8293.jpg

1.

I cannot take this Louis Vuitton necklace off! My mom brought it back for me from the LV in Paris in November, and it's become an every day staple for me. I wear it to class, to dinner, going out, literally everywhere. I'm not sure the metal composititon, but I am able to say, it has yet to tarnish!

2.

The mules. The Mules. The Gucci Mules. I am still as obsessed with these as when I bought them the first time I tried them on. They're a go-to for me and I think they look good yer round. What's better? They're extra quirky with some wild socks, or you can dial them down by wearing shorts and a band tee.

IMG_8300.jpg

IMG_8275.jpg

3.

With every most-worn item, there's a reason you can't take it off! This particular Zara one is a favorite because of how thin it is! It was the perfect transition sweater and can be worn in so many ways. Sometime's I wear it with work out shorts for a comfortable house look, but I also tuck it in pants for more of a day-look.

4.

Did you really think a classic black belt wouldn't be on the list? This vintage Brooks Brothers belt goes perfectly with my mules so DUH! Any type of belt can add so much to an outfit, wether it's casual or formal. A belt, band tee, and jeans always looks so cool and vintage. On the other hand, I nice printed shirt with some wide-legged trousers looks super Parisian.

5.

Finally, I've listed my most worn jeans. The pockets on these Eckhaus Latta jeans speak to me. The might not be the best for keeping your items secure, but they look fun as hell. Maybe unique pockets are going to be "so next season." The dad fit is a sure fire way to ensure maximum comfort.

I couldn't find a similar sweater! I'm sorry!
